S. Martinelli and Company Teamsters started early on their negotiation preparation. Their contract expires in February. The members of this Committee represent every department in the company. And the seniority is from 3 to 34 years.
More time to prepare means better negotiations and a better contract. And this team is going to the mat to fight hard for their future.
The NorCal committee’s last bargaining session with the Company was on June 6th. The company remains unwilling to bargain over individual proposals and has maintained their position that the only way to get a potential tentative agreement is if the Union will accept the company’s current package deal. There are very few items currently on the table to bargain over, and most of the proposals could be agreed to by both parties if they were not attached to a package deal. (Take it or leave it mentality of UPS!)
Members of the NorCal committee that are on the National Negotiating committee have not attended National Negotiations since May 5th. The instructions from General President Sean O’Brien and General Secretary Treasurer Fred Zuckerman have been for the NorCal committee to remain at home to finish the NorCal Supplement negotiations. While the NorCal Committee is looking forward to participating in the National Negotiations, we will remain steadfast while we attempt to finish the NorCal agreement.
The NorCal committee will not be held hostage by UPS and its tactics to try to make NorCal agree to a package deal. The NorCal committee made it extremely clear to the Company on June 6th that we are willing to continue bargaining the contract when the Company agrees to bargain over individual proposals. As of today, the Company has not changed their position. As soon as UPS decides to take these negotiations seriously and bargain in good faith over individual proposals, the NorCal Committee will continue meeting with the Company to negotiate.
Teamsters Local 853 represents zoo keepers at the Oakland Zoo. These professionals are negotiating a first-time agreement with the venerable Oakland institution. President of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors Nate Miley stopped by a recent meeting of the members to learn about their jobs and voice his support for Oakland Zoo Teamster Zoo Keepers!
“The Supervisor was warm and genuine and the keepers were glad to give him a real insight as to what they do.” Said Stacie Picone, a member of the negotiating committee.

UPS 853 Members got thrown a curve ball last week Wednesday. The IBT needed a national bargaining chip right away as negotiations continued between the Teamsters and UPS for the master contract, which will define the UPS work agreement for the next five years.
In less than three(3) days, the Local and members had to organize a vote drive on whether or not to give the IBT permission to strike if they needed to exercise that option during negotiations.
Everyone came together and got it done. Members had to take extra time to be available to vote, and staff scrambled to put two fully staffed voting stations in place. One voting station went well past 10:00 PM to accommodate as many members as possible.
“A strong thank you to all the members,” said David Crawford, UPS Business Agent. “Everyone came together and gave Teamsters Local 853 and the IBT the tools it needed to strengthen our negotiating stance at the national level.”
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT A VOTE IS SCHEDULED FOR:

Members in Southern California have been fighting with Amazon to bargain, and as most anti-union companies do, they are stalling to negotiate a contract. They have used every tactic possible, and these members refused to budge. They need our help. Please donate to support these members who are taking on a more significant fight than just Southern California Amazon. They are fighting for all workers in Amazon facilities nationwide to organize for a better future and BECOME TEAMSTERS! Your donations will go towards bridging the gap of lost wages during a strike against Amazon for better working conditions. Every penny helps. Do not be embarrassed to donate as little as $1. It helps.
Congratulations to Randy Nave, Teamster 853 member at Gillig, who retired last week. Randy had over 40 years as a Teamster!! Here are a few snapshots at the Barbecue that Gillig threw for him on a beautiful day outside the plant.
“Randy has had a wonderful career and is due his ride into the sunset.” Said Steve Beck, “But in true Teamsters fashion, he has assured me with upcoming contract negotiations slated for later this year; he will be ready for anything that we at Teamsters Local 853 need from him, even after his retirement. That’s what Teamsters are about!”
Teamsters 853 members at Gillig bus manufacturing got a big boost from Local 853 and International Brotherhood of Teamsters general president Sean O’Brien last week. In 2020 legislation called the Transit Infrastructure Vehicle Security Funds Act was created. This bill was created and passed to prevent federal dollars from being allocated to foreign, state-supported, companies like Chinese bus manufacturing companies BYD and CRRC. However, there was a loophole in the legislation that allowed federal funds to still flow to these companies.
Teamster Local 853 leadership in conjunction with International Brotherhood of Teamsters general president Sean O’Brien have been working diligently to advocate for the over 500 Gillig jobs that are impacted by this loophole. Below is a letter to Congressional Representatives Eric Swalwell (D-CA), John Garamendi (D-CA), and Angie Craig (D-MN) in support of a bill these representatives penned called the Airport Infrastructure Vehicle Security Act. This bill would further limit the federal purchase of vehicles manufactured by Chinese-owned or operated companies.
This legislative fight directly impacts 500 Teamster 853 members who work at Gillig, building American-made buses.
Teamsters Local 853 would like to thank General President Sean O’Brien, representatives U.S. Representatives Eric Swalwell (D-CA), John Garamendi (D-CA), and Angie Craig (D-MN) and the lobbyists who brought this matter to their attention, and for their continuing efforts to safeguard American security and union jobs. Please stay tuned as we keep you up to date on the results of these efforts and the passage of this legislation.
