The Harry Polland/Robert Morales Scholarship Program

Teamsters Joint Council 7 sponsors an annual scholarship program to help affiliated Locals to improve the quality of life for members and their families. The scholarship is named in honor of Harry Polland, former Economist and Partner at the Beeson, Tayer, and Bodine Law Firm and Rober Morales, former Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Joint Council #7 and Teamsters Local 350, as well as Director of the IBT's Solid Waste Division.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 Scholarships. All eligible Local 853 families are encouraged to apply.

The Scholarship Committee is comprised of the Executive Board members of the Joint Council, who are also the principal officers of seven of the Local Unions affiliated with the Joint Council. The Committee will be responsible for reviewing scholarshp applications and awarding the scholarships. The Committee will also ensure that scholarships are awarded to the children of members at each affiliated Local Union on rotating basis.

The following criteria will be considered for scholarships: academic achievement, financial need, school activities, community service, and an essay entitled "The Importance of Labor Unions". Scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis. The number of scholarships and the amounts thereof will be determined solely by the Teamsters Joint Council 7 Executive Board and based on available funds. Applications and scholarships will not be judged based on sex, age, race, creed, natinal origin, religious preference, or income of the parents. A proff of registration may be requested during this process.

Eligible Applicants:

Applicants are eligible for scholarships when a parent or legal guardian (proof may be required) is an active member in good standing with one of the Teamsters Local Unions affiliated with Joint Council 7, including Local 853. Elected officials and employees of Teamsters Local Unions and Joint Councils and their families are not eligible.


  1. Grade point average of 2.0 (based on a 4.0 system) upon high school graduation.
  2. The scholarship is to be used for scholastic and vocational fields only.
  3. Applicant must submit a resume of school and community activities. Include a copy of transcript through your most recent semester.
  4. Applicant must submit a two-page handwritten or typed essay on the topic "The Importance of Labor Unions".
  5. A recent photo must accompany applications.
  7. Application must be returned and postmarked no later than July 1.
